My litmus test for a good Dylan album is “do I want to keep playing it”. Street Legal, to give an example, was for weeks on my turntable. Same with Time out of Mind (this time in the CD-player). Empire Burlesque didn’t stand the test. Played it a couple of times, never returned to it.

To think of it, after four strong albums (street legal, slow train, saved and shot of love, all “S” albums by the way), Empire Burlesque was the kick-off of a poor Dylan period (Empire Burlesque, Knocked out loaded and Down in the groove).
