Bob Dylan’s Lady doctor and You
One of the bootlegs of Dylan is called ‘some of the bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff’. Well I wonder.
Having one of the biggest (vinyl) Dylan bootleg collections, I have always wondered ‘who makes this stuff’. Dylan fans? Money makers?
One of the bootlegs I like (because I was there) is Zim’s picnic. It is a rare (rare because i have a copy with printed labels) 1979 British production of the Dylan concert at Blackbush Aerodrome on July 15, 1978. It is the last concert of the European leg of the world tour 1978. Also present at the ‘picnic’ are Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading and Graham Parker.
Now look at the pic on the iPad. The record sleeve has titles like Lady Doctor and You. If you haven’t been there, you would buy the bootleg immediately for these ‘unknown’ Dylan songs.
Of course this is not the case. Lady Doctor is Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues. The only reference to doctor in that song is:
And the best friend, my doctor
won’t even say what it is that i got
And there is no clue that it is a lady doctor.
You is Ballad of a thin man and is the you that is attacked in the song:
Because something is happening here
But You don’t know what it is
Do you Mister Jones.
My conclusion: bootleggers are money makers. Otherwise I cannot explain the wrong song titles.
This blog is dedicated to the art of mindmapping and to the music of Bob Dylan.
